Leviticus 1-5


1 |

1 And יהוה called to Mosheh, and spoke to him from the Tent of Meeting, saying,

2 “Speak to the children of Yisra’ĕl, and say to them, ‘When anyone of you brings an offering to יהוה, you bring your offering of the livestock, of the herd or of the flock.

3 ‘If his offering is a burnt offering of the herd, let him bring a male, a perfect one. Let him bring it at the door of the Tent of Meeting, for his acceptance before יהוה.

4 ‘And he shall lay his hand on the head of the burnt offering, and it shall be accepted on his behalf to make atonement for him.

5 ‘And he shall slaughter the bull before יהוה. And the sons of Aharon, the priests, shall bring the blood and sprinkle the blood all around on the altar which is at the door of the Tent of Meeting.

6 ‘And he shall skin the burnt offering and cut it into its pieces.

7 ‘And the sons of Aharon the priest shall put fire on the altar, and lay the wood in order on the fire.

8 ‘And the sons of Aharon, the priests, shall arrange the pieces, with the head and the fat on the wood which is on the fire on the altar.

9 ‘But its entrails and its legs he washes with water. And the priest shall burn all of it on the altar as a burnt offering, an offering made by fire, a sweet fragrance to יהוה.

10 ‘And if his offering is from the flock, from the sheep or from the goats as a burnt offering, let him bring a male, a perfect one.

11 ‘And he shall slaughter it on the north side of the altar before יהוה. And the sons of Aharon, the priests, shall sprinkle its blood on the altar all around.

12 ‘And he shall cut it into its pieces, with its head and its fat, and the priest shall arrange them on the wood which is on the fire on the altar.

13 ‘But the entrails and the legs he washes with water. And the priest shall bring it all and burn it on the altar. It is a burnt offering, an offering made by fire, a sweet fragrance to יהוה.

14 ‘And if the burnt offering of his offering to יהוה is of birds, then he shall bring his offering of turtledoves or young pigeons.

15 ‘And the priest shall bring it to the altar, and shall wring off its head, and burn it on the altar, and its blood shall be drained out at the side of the altar.

16 ‘And he shall remove its crop with its feathers and throw it beside the altar on the east side, into the place for ashes.

17 ‘And he shall split it at its wings, but not sever it. And the priest shall burn it on the altar, on the wood that is on the fire. It is a burnt offering, an offering made by fire, a sweet fragrance to יהוה.

2| 1 ‘And when anyone brings a grain offering to יהוה, his offering is to be of fine flour. And he shall pour oil on it, and put frankincense on it,

2 and he shall bring it to the sons of Aharon, the priests, and he shall take from it his hand filled with fine flour and oil with all the frankincense. And the priest shall burn it as a remembrance portion on the altar, an offering made by fire, a sweet fragrance to יהוה.

3 ‘And the rest of the grain offering is for Aharon and his sons, most set-apart of the offerings to יהוה by fire.

4 ‘And when you bring as an offering a grain offering baked in the oven, it is of unleavened cakes of fine flour mixed with oil, or unleavened thin cakes anointed with oil.

5 ‘But if your offering is a grain offering on the griddle, it is of fine flour, unleavened, mixed with oil.

6 ‘Divide it into bits and pour oil on it, it is a grain offering.

7 ‘And if your offering is a grain offering, in a stewing-pot, it is made of fine flour with oil.

8 ‘And you shall bring to יהוה the grain offering that is made of these, and shall present it to the priest, and he shall bring it to the altar.

9 ‘And the priest shall take from the grain offering a remembrance portion, and burn it on the altar, an offering made by fire, a sweet fragrance to יהוה.

10 ‘And the rest of the grain offering is for Aharon and his sons, most set-apart of the offerings to יהוה made by fire.

11 ‘No grain offering which you bring to יהוה is made with leaven, for you do not burn any leaven or any honey in an offering to יהוה made by fire.

12 ‘Bring them to יהוה as an offering of the first-fruits, but they are not burned on the altar for a sweet fragrance.

13 ‘And season with salt every offering of your grain offering, and do not allow the salt of the covenant of your Elohim to be lacking from your grain offering. With all your offerings you bring salt.

14 ‘And if you bring a grain offering of your first-fruits to יהוה, bring for the grain offering of your first-fruits green heads of grain roasted on the fire, crushed heads of new grain.

15 ‘And you shall put oil on it, and lay frankincense on it. It is a grain offering.

16 ‘And the priest shall burn the remembrance portion, from its crushed grain and from its oil, with all the frankincense, an offering made by fire to יהוה.

3| 1 ‘And if that which he presents is a peace offering, if he is bringing it of the herd, whether male or female, he brings a perfect one before יהוה.

2 ‘And he shall lay his hand on the head of his offering, and slaughter it at the door of the Tent of Meeting. And the sons of Aharon, the priests, shall sprinkle the blood on the altar all around.

3 ‘And from the peace offering he shall bring an offering made by fire to יהוה, the fat that covers the entrails and all the fat that is on the entrails,

4 and the two kidneys, and the fat that is on them by the loins, and the appendage on the liver which he removes with the kidneys.

5 ‘And the sons of Aharon shall burn it on the altar upon the burnt offering, which is on the wood, which is on the fire, as an offering made by fire, a sweet fragrance to יהוה.

6 ‘And if that which he presents is from the flock, for a peace offering to יהוה, male or female, he brings a perfect one.

7 ‘If he is bringing a lamb as his offering, then he shall bring it before יהוה,

8 and shall lay his hand on the head of his offering, and slaughter it in front of the Tent of Meeting, and the sons of Aharon shall sprinkle its blood on the altar round about.

9 ‘And from the peace offering he shall bring near – as an offering made by fire to יהוה – its fat, all the fat tail which he removes close to the backbone, and the fat that covers the entrails and all the fat that is on the entrails,

10 and the two kidneys and the fat that is on them by the loins, and the appendage on the liver, which he removes with the kidneys.

11 ‘And the priest shall burn them on the altar as food, an offering made by fire to יהוה.

12 ‘And if his offering is a goat, then he shall bring it before יהוה,

13 and shall lay his hand on its head and slaughter it before the Tent of Meeting. And the sons of Aharon shall sprinkle its blood on the altar all around.

14 ‘And from it he shall bring his offering, as an offering made by fire to יהוה, the fat that covers the entrails and all the fat that is on the entrails,

15 and the two kidneys and the fat that is on them by the loins, and the appendage on the liver, which he removes with the kidneys.

16 ‘And the priest shall burn them on the altar as food, an offering made by fire for a sweet fragrance. All the fat belongs to יהוה.

17 ‘An everlasting law throughout your generations in all your dwellings: you do not eat any fat or any blood.’ ”

4| 1 And יהוה spoke to Mosheh, saying,

2 “Speak to the children of Yisra’ĕl, saying, ‘When a being sins by mistake against any of the commands of יהוה, which are not to be done, and shall do any of them:

3 ‘If the anointed priest sins, bringing guilt on the people, then he shall bring to יהוה for his sin which he has sinned a young bull, a perfect one, as a sin offering,

4 and he shall bring the bull to the door of the Tent of Meeting before יהוה, and shall lay his hand on the bull’s head, and slaughter the bull before יהוה.

5 ‘And the anointed priest shall take some of the bull’s blood and bring it to the Tent of Meeting,

6 and the priest shall dip his finger in the blood and sprinkle some of the blood seven times before יהוה, in front of the veil of the set-apart place.

7 ‘And the priest shall put some of the blood on the horns of the altar of sweet incense before יהוה, which is in the Tent of Meeting, and pour all the blood of the bull at the base of the altar of the burnt offering, which is at the door of the Tent of Meeting.

8 ‘Then he takes all the fat of the bull as the sin offering, the fat that covers the entrails and all the fat which is on the entrails,

9 and the two kidneys and the fat that is on them by the loins, and the appendage on the liver, which he removes with the kidneys,

10 as it was taken from the bull of the peace offering. And the priest shall burn them on the altar of the burnt offering.

11 ‘But the skin of the bull, and all its flesh, with its head and legs, its entrails and dung –

12 all of the bull – he shall bring outside the camp to a clean place, where the ashes are poured out, and burn it on wood with fire. Where the ashes are poured out it is burned.

13 ‘And if the entire congregation of Yisra’ĕl strays by mistake, and the matter has been hidden from the eyes of the assembly, and they have done against any of the commands of יהוה, which are not to be done, and shall be guilty,

14 when the sin which they have sinned becomes known, then the assembly shall bring a young bull for the sin, and bring it before the Tent of Meeting.

15 ‘And the elders of the congregation shall lay their hands on the head of the bull before יהוה, and the bull shall be slaughtered before יהוה.

16 ‘And the anointed priest shall bring some of the bull’s blood to the Tent of Meeting,

17 and the priest shall dip his finger in the blood and sprinkle it seven times before יהוה, in front of the veil,

18 and put some of the blood on the horns of the altar which is before יהוה, which is in the Tent of Meeting, and pour all the blood at the base of the altar of burnt offering, which is at the door of the Tent of Meeting.

19 ‘Then he takes all the fat from it and shall burn it on the altar.

20 ‘And he shall do with the bull as he did with the bull as a sin offering – so shall he do it. And the priest shall make atonement for them, and it shall be forgiven them.

21 ‘And he shall bring the bull outside the camp, and burn it as he burned the first bull. It is a sin offering for the assembly.

22 ‘When a ruler sins, and by mistake has done against any of the commands of יהוה his Elohim which are not to be done, and shall be guilty,

23 or if his sin which he has sinned is made known to him, then he shall bring as his offering a buck of the goats, a male, a perfect one.

24 ‘And he shall lay his hand on the head of the goat, and slaughter it at the place where they slaughter the burnt offering before יהוה. It is a sin offering.

25 ‘And the priest shall take some of the blood of the sin offering with his finger, and shall put it on the horns of the altar of burnt offering, and pour its blood at the base of the altar of burnt offering,

26 and burn all its fat on the altar, like the fat of the slaughtering of the peace offering. And the priest shall make atonement for him for his sin, and it shall be forgiven him.

27 ‘And if any being of the people of the land sins by mistake by doing against any of the commands of יהוה which are not to be done, and shall be guilty,

28 or if his sin which he has sinned shall be made known to him, then he shall bring as his offering a female goat, a perfect one, for his sin which he has sinned.

29 ‘And he shall lay his hand on the head of the sin offering, and slaughter the sin offering at the place of the burnt offering.

30 ‘And the priest shall take some of its blood with his finger, and shall put it on the horns of the altar of burnt offering, and pour all the blood at the base of the altar,

31 then remove all its fat, as fat is removed from the slaughtering of the peace offering. And the priest shall burn it on the altar for a sweet fragrance to יהוה. And the priest shall make atonement for him, and it shall be forgiven him.

32 ‘And if he brings a lamb as his sin offering, he brings a female, a perfect one.

33 ‘And he shall lay his hand on the head of the sin offering, and slaughter it as a sin offering at the place where they slaughter the burnt offering.

34 ‘And the priest shall take some of the blood of the sin offering with his finger, and shall put it on the horns of the altar of burnt offering, and pour all the blood at the base of the altar.

35 ‘Then he removes all its fat, as the fat of the lamb is removed from the slaughtering of the peace offering. And the priest shall burn it on the altar, according to the offerings made by fire to יהוה. So the priest shall make atonement for his sin that he has sinned, and it shall be forgiven him.

5|1 ‘And when a being sins in that he has heard the voice of swearing, and is a witness, or has seen, or has known, but does not reveal it, he shall bear his crookedness.

2 ‘Or when a being touches any unclean matter, or the carcass of an unclean beast, or the carcass of unclean livestock, or the carcass of unclean creeping creatures, and it has been hidden from him, he is unclean and guilty.

3 ‘Or when he touches uncleanness of man, any of his uncleanness by which he is unclean, and it has been hidden from him, when he shall know it, then he shall be guilty.

4 ‘Or when a being swears, speaking rashly with his lips to do evil or to do good, whatever it is that a man swears rashly with an oath, and it has been hidden from him, when he shall know it, then he shall be guilty of one of these.

5 ‘And it shall be, when he is guilty of one of these, that he shall confess that in which he has sinned,

6 and shall bring his guilt offering to יהוה for his sin which he has sinned, a female from the flock, a lamb or a female goat as a sin offering. And the priest shall make atonement for him, for his sin.

7 ‘And if he is unable to bring a lamb, then he shall bring to יהוה, he who has sinned, two turtledoves or two young pigeons, one for a sin offering and the other for a burnt offering.

8 ‘And he shall bring them to the priest, who shall bring near that which is for the sin offering first, and wring off its head from its neck, but not sever it.

9 ‘And he shall sprinkle some of the blood of the sin offering on the side of the altar, and the rest of the blood shall be drained out at the base of the altar. It is a sin offering.

10 ‘And he shall prepare the second as a burnt offering according to the right-ruling, and the priest shall make atonement for him, for his sin which he has sinned, and it shall be forgiven him.

11 ‘But if he is unable to bring two turtledoves or two young pigeons, then he who sinned shall bring for his offering one-tenth of an ĕphah of fine flour as a sin offering. He puts no oil on it, nor does he put any frankincense on it, for it is a sin offering.

12 ‘And he shall bring it to the priest, and the priest shall take his hand filled with it as a remembrance portion, and burn it on the altar according to the offerings made by fire to יהוה. It is a sin offering.

13 ‘And the priest shall make atonement for him, for his sin that he has sinned in any of these, and it shall be forgiven him. And it shall be the priest’s, like a grain offering.’ ”

14 And יהוה spoke to Mosheh, saying,

15 “When a being commits a trespass, and has sinned by mistake against the set-apart matters of יהוה, then he shall bring to יהוה as his guilt offering a ram, a perfect one, from the flock, with your valuation in sheqels of silver according to the sheqel of the set-apart place, as a guilt offering.

16 “And he shall make good for the sin that he has done against that which is set-apart, and shall add one-fifth to it and give it to the priest. And the priest shall make atonement for him with the ram of the guilt offering, and it shall be forgiven him.

17 “And when any being sins, and has done what is not to be done, against any of the commands of יהוה, though he knew it not, yet he shall be guilty and shall bear his crookedness.

18 “Then he shall bring to the priest a ram, a perfect one, from the flock, with your valuation, as a guilt offering. And the priest shall make atonement for his mistake he committed unintentionally, though he did not know it, and it shall be forgiven him –

19 it is a guilt offering, he was truly guilty before יהוה.”

Isaiah 23-23


22|1 The message concerning the Valley of Vision. What troubles you now, that you have all gone up to the house-tops,

2 you who are filled with turmoils, a noisy city, a city of revelry? Your slain are not slain with the sword, nor the dead in battle.

3 All your rulers have fled together; without a bow they were taken captive. All who are found in you are bound together, who have fled from afar.

4 Therefore I said, “Look away from me, let me weep bitterly. Do not try to comfort me because of the ravaging of the daughter of my people.”

5 For it is a day of uproar and treading down and perplexity by the Master יהוה of hosts in the Valley of Vision – breaking down of a wall and of crying to the mountain.

6 And Ěylam bore the quiver with chariots of men and horsemen, and Qir bared the shield.

7 And it shall be that your choicest valleys shall be filled with chariots, and the horsemen shall take up positions at the gate.

8 Then He removed the covering of Yehuḏah. And you looked in that day to the weapons of the House of the Forest.

9 And you saw the breaches of the city of Dawiḏ, that it was great. And you gathered together the waters of the lower pool.

10 And you counted the houses of Yerushalayim, and the houses you broke down to strengthen the wall.

11 And you dug a ditch between the two walls for the water of the old pool. But you have not looked to its Maker, nor have you seen Him who fashioned it long ago.

12 And in that day the Master יהוה of hosts called for weeping and for mourning, for baldness and for girding with sackcloth.

13 Then see! Joy and gladness, slaying oxen and killing sheep, eating meat and drinking wine, “Let us eat and drink, for tomorrow we die!”

14 And it was revealed in my hearing by יהוה of hosts, “For this crookedness shall certainly not be pardoned until you die,” said the Master יהוה of hosts.

15 Thus said the Master יהוה of hosts, “Go, come to this steward, to Sheḇnah, who is over the house, and say,

16 ‘What have you here, and whom have you here, that you have hewn a tomb here, as he who hews himself a tomb on high, cutting out a resting place for himself in a rock?

17 ‘See, יהוה is hurling you away, O man, and is firmly grasping you,

18 rolling you up tightly like a ball, into a wide land. There you are to die, and there your esteemed chariots are to be the shame of your master’s house.

19 ‘And I shall drive you from your office, and you shall be ousted from your position.

20 ‘And it shall be in that day, that I shall call My servant Elyaqim son of Ḥilqiyahu.

21 ‘And I shall put your robe on him, and strengthen him with your girdle, and give your authority into his hand. And he shall be a father to the inhabitants of Yerushalayim and to the house of Yehuḏah.

22 ‘And I shall place the key of the house of Dawiḏ on his shoulder. And he shall open, and no one shuts; and shall shut, and no one opens.

23 ‘And I shall fasten him like a peg in a steadfast place, and he shall become a throne of esteem to his father’s house.

24 ‘And they shall hang on him all the weight of his father’s house, the offspring and the offshoots, all vessels of small quantity, from the cups to all the jars.

25 ‘In that day,’ declares יהוה of hosts, ‘the peg that is fastened in the steadfast place shall be removed and be cut down and fall, and the burden that was on it shall be cut off. For יהוה has spoken.’ ”

23| 1 The message concerning Tsor. Howl, you ships of Tarshish! For it has been destroyed, without house, without harbour. From the land of Kittim it has been revealed to them.

2 Be silent, you inhabitants of the coastland, you merchants of Tsiḏon, who passed over the sea, they filled you.

3 And on great waters the grain of Shiḥor, the harvest of the River, was her increase. And she was a market-place for the nations.

4 Be ashamed, O Tsiḏon, for the sea has spoken, the stronghold of the sea, saying, “I have not laboured, nor brought forth children; neither have I reared young men, brought up maidens.”

5 Like the report of Mitsrayim, they too are grieved at the report of Tsor.

6 Pass over to Tarshish; wail, you inhabitants of the coastland!

7 Is this your city of revelry, whose antiquity is from days of old, whose feet carried her far off to sojourn?

8 Who has counselled this against Tsor, the crowning city, whose merchants are chiefs, whose traders are the esteemed of the earth?

9 יהוה of hosts has counselled it, to defile the pride of all splendour, and to shame all the esteemed of the earth.

10 Overflow through your land like the River, O daughter of Tarshish; there is no more strength.

11 He has stretched out His hand over the sea, He shook the reigns; יהוה has given a command against Kena‛an to destroy its strongholds.

12 And He said, “Never again shall you exult, O you oppressed maiden daughter of Tsiḏon. Arise, pass over to Kittim, even there you shall find no rest.”

13 See the land of the Chaldeans – this people did not exist. Ashshur founded it for wild beasts of the desert. They set up their siege-towers, they demolished her palaces, and made her a ruin.

14 Howl, you ships of Tarshish, for your stronghold is laid waste!

15 And in that day it shall be that Tsor is forgotten seventy years, according to the days of one sovereign. At the end of seventy years it shall be to Tsor as in the song of the whore:

16 “Take a lyre, go about the city, you forgotten whore; make sweet playing, sing many songs, so that you might be remembered.”

17 And at the end of seventy years it shall be that יהוה visits Tsor. And she shall return to her hire and commit whoring with all the reigns of the earth on the face of the soil.

18 And her goods and her hire shall be set apart for יהוה, not treasured nor laid up, for her gain is for those who dwell before יהוה, to eat sufficiently, and for a choice covering.

Judges 10-11


10|1 And after Aḇimeleḵ there arose Tola son of Pu’ah, son of Doḏo, a man of Yissasḵar, to save Yisra’ĕl. And he dwelt in Shamur in the mountains of Ephrayim.

2 And he ruled Yisra’ĕl twenty-three years. Then he died and was buried in Shamur.

3 And after him arose Ya’ir, a Gil‛aḏite, and he ruled Yisra’ĕl twenty-two years.

4 And he had thirty sons who rode on thirty donkeys. And they had thirty towns, which are called Hawoth Yair to this day, which are in the land of Gil‛aḏ.

5 And Ya’ir died, and was buried in Qamon.

6 And the children of Yisra’ĕl again did evil in the eyes of יהוה, and served the Ba‛als and the Ashtoreths, and the mighty ones of Aram, and the mighty ones of Tsiḏon, and the mighty ones of Mo’aḇ, and the mighty ones of the children of Ammon, and the mighty ones of the Philistines – and forsook יהוה and did not serve Him.

7 Therefore the displeasure of יהוה burned against Yisra’ĕl. And He sold them into the hands of the Philistines and into the hands of the children of Ammon.

8 And they crushed and oppressed the children of Yisra’ĕl that year – for eighteen years – all the children of Yisra’ĕl who were beyond the Yardĕn in the land of the Amorites, in Gil‛aḏ.

9 And the children of Ammon passed over the Yardĕn to fight against Yehuḏah, and against Binyamin, and against the house of Ephrayim, so that Yisra’ĕl had great distress.

10 And the children of Yisra’ĕl cried out to יהוה, saying, “We have sinned against You, because we have both forsaken our Elohim and served the Ba‛als!”

11 So יהוה said to the children of Yisra’ĕl, “Was it not from the Mitsrites and from the Amorites and from the children of Ammon and from the Philistines that I saved you?

12 “And the Tsiḏonians and Amalĕq and Ma‛on oppressed you. And you cried out to Me, and I saved you from their hand.

13 “But you, you have forsaken Me and served other mighty ones. Therefore I do not save you again.

14 “Go and cry out to the mighty ones which you have chosen, let them save you in your time of distress.”

15 And the children of Yisra’ĕl said to יהוה, “We have sinned! Do to us whatever is good in Your eyes, only deliver us today, please.”

16 So they put away the foreign mighty ones from their midst and served יהוה. And His being was grieved with the trouble of Yisra’ĕl.

17 Then the children of Ammon were called together and encamped in Gil‛aḏ. And the children of Yisra’ĕl gathered together and encamped in Mitspah.

18 And the people, the heads of Gil‛aḏ, said to each other, “Let the man who is the first to fight against the children of Ammon be head over all the inhabitants of Gil‛aḏ.”

11| 1 And Yiphtaḥ the Gil‛aḏite was a mighty brave one, but he was the son of a whore. And Gil‛aḏ brought forth Yiphtaḥ.

2 And the wife of Gil‛aḏ bore sons. And when his wife’s sons grew up, they drove Yiphtaḥ out, and said to him, “You shall not have an inheritance in the house of our father, for you are the son of another woman.”

3 And Yiphtaḥ fled from his brothers and dwelt in the land of Toḇ. And worthless men banded together with Yiphtaḥ and went out with him.

4 And it came to be, some time later, that the children of Ammon fought against Yisra’ĕl.

5 And it came to be, when the children of Ammon fought against Yisra’ĕl, that the elders of Gil‛aḏ went to bring Yiphtaḥ out of the land of Toḇ.

6 And they said to Yiphtaḥ, “Come, and you shall be our commander, and let us fight against the children of Ammon.”

7 But Yiphtaḥ said to the elders of Gil‛aḏ, “Did you not hate me, and drive me from my father’s house? Why have you come to me now when you are in trouble?”

8 And the elders of Gil‛aḏ said to Yiphtaḥ, “That is the reason we have turned to you, that you shall go with us and fight against the children of Ammon, and be our head over all the inhabitants of Gil‛aḏ.”

9 And Yiphtaḥ said to the elders of Gil‛aḏ, “If you take me back home to fight against the children of Ammon, and יהוה gives them to me, am I to be your head?”

10 And the elders of Gil‛aḏ said to Yiphtaḥ, “יהוה is witness between us, if we do not do according to your words.”

11 Then Yiphtaḥ went with the elders of Gil‛aḏ, and the people set him over them, as head and commander. And Yiphtaḥ spoke all his words before יהוה in Mitspah.

12 And Yiphtaḥ sent messengers to the sovereign of the children of Ammon, saying, “What is between you and me, that you have come to fight against me in my land?”

13 And the sovereign of the children of Ammon said to the messengers of Yiphtaḥ, “Because Yisra’ĕl took my land when they came up out of Mitsrayim, from the Arnon as far as the Yabboq, and to the Yardĕn. And now, give back those lands in peace.”

14 But Yiphtaḥ again sent messengers to the sovereign of the children of Ammon,

15 and said to him, “This is what Yiphtaḥ said, ‘Yisra’ĕl did not take the land of Mo’aḇ, nor the land of the children of Ammon.

16 ‘For when they came up from Mitsrayim, and Yisra’ĕl walked through the wilderness as far as the Sea of Reeds and came to Qaḏĕsh,

17 then Yisra’ĕl sent messengers to the sovereign of Eḏom, saying, “Please let me pass over, through your land.” But the sovereign of Eḏom would not listen. And they also sent to the sovereign of Mo’aḇ, but he refused, so Yisra’ĕl stayed at Qaḏĕsh.

18 ‘Then they went through the wilderness and around the land of Eḏom and the land of Mo’aḇ, and came to the east side of the land of Mo’aḇ, and encamped beyond Arnon. But they did not enter the border of Mo’aḇ, for Arnon was the border of Mo’aḇ.

19 ‘And Yisra’ĕl sent messengers to Siḥon sovereign of the Amorites, sovereign of Ḥeshbon, and Yisra’ĕl said to him, “Please let us pass over, through your land into our place.”

20 ‘But Siḥon did not trust Yisra’ĕl to pass over through his border, and Siḥon gathered all his people together, and they encamped in Yahats, and fought against Yisra’ĕl.

21 ‘And יהוה Elohim of Yisra’ĕl gave Siḥon and all his people into the hand of Yisra’ĕl, and they smote them. So Yisra’ĕl took possession of all the land of the Amorites, the inhabitants of that land.

22 ‘Thus they took possession of all the border of the Amorites, from Arnon to the Yabboq and from the wilderness to the Yardĕn.

23 ‘And now, יהוה Elohim of Yisra’ĕl has driven out the Amorites from before His people Yisra’ĕl, should you then possess it?

24 ‘Whatever Kemosh your mighty one gives you to possess, do you not possess it? And all that which יהוה our Elohim takes possession of before us, we possess.

25 ‘And now are you any better than Balaq son of Tsippor, sovereign of Mo’aḇ? Did he ever strive against Yisra’ĕl? Did he ever fight against them?

26 ‘While Yisra’ĕl dwelt in Ḥeshbon and its villages, and in Aro‛ĕr and its villages, and in all the cities along the banks of Arnon, for three hundred years, why did you not recover them within that time?

27 ‘So I have not sinned against you, but you are doing me evil by fighting against me. Let יהוה the Judge, judge today between the children of Yisra’ĕl and the children of Ammon.’ ”

28 But the sovereign of the children of Ammon did not listen to the words which Yiphtaḥ sent him.

29 And the Spirit of יהוה came upon Yiphtaḥ, and he passed through Gil‛aḏ and Menashsheh, and passed through Mitspeh of Gil‛aḏ. And from Mitspeh of Gil‛aḏ he passed on toward the children of Ammon.

30 And Yiphtaḥ made a vow to יהוה, and said, “If You give the children of Ammon into my hands,

31 then it shall be that whatever comes out of the doors of my house to meet me, when I return in peace from the children of Ammon, shall belong to יהוה, and I shall offer it up as a burnt offering.”

32 Yiphtaḥ then passed on toward the children of Ammon to fight against them, and יהוה gave them into his hands.

33 And he smote them from Aro‛ĕr as far as Minnith, twenty cities, and to Aḇĕl Keramim, with a very great slaughter. Thus the children of Ammon were humbled before the children of Yisra’ĕl.

34 And Yiphtaḥ came to his house at Mitspah, and saw his daughter coming out to meet him with timbrels and dancing. Now except for her he had neither son nor daughter.

35 And it came to be, when he saw her, that he tore his garments, and said, “Oh my daughter! You have brought me very low, and you are among those who trouble me! And I, I have given my word to יהוה, and I am unable to turn back.”

36 And she said to him, “My father, if you have given your word to יהוה, do to me according to what has gone out of your mouth, because יהוה has taken vengeance for you upon your enemies, the children of Ammon.”

37 And she said to her father, “Let this be done for me: let me alone for two months, and let me go and wander on the mountains and bewail my maidenhood, my friends and I.”

38 Then he said, “Go.” And he sent her away for two months. And she went with her friends, and bewailed her maidenhood on the mountains.

39 And it came to be at the end of two months that she returned to her father, and he did to her as he had vowed, and she knew no man. And it became a statute in Yisra’ĕl

40 that the daughters of Yisra’ĕl went every year for four days to lament the daughter of Yiphtaḥ the Gil‛aḏite.

Acts 1


1|1 The first account I made, O Theophilos, of all that יהושע began both to do and to teach,

2 until the day when He was taken up, after giving instructions through the Set-apart Spirit to the emissaries whom He had chosen,

3 to whom He also presented Himself alive after His suffering by many infallible proofs, being seen by them for forty days, speaking concerning the reign of Elohim.

4 And meeting with them, He commanded them not to leave Yerushalayim, but to wait for the Promise of the Father,a “which you have heard from Me –

5 because Yoḥanan truly immersed in water, but you shall be immersed in the Set-apart Spirit not many days from now.”

6 So when they had come together, they asked Him, saying, “Master, would You at this time restore the reign to Yisra’ĕl?”a

7 And He said to them, “It is not for you to know times or seasons which the Father has put in His own authority.

8 “But you shall receive power when the Set-apart Spirit has come upon you, and you shall be My witnesses in Yerushalayim, and in all Yehuḏah and Shomeron, and to the end of the earth.”

9 And having said this, while they were looking on, He was taken up, and a cloud hid Him from their sight.

10 And as they were gazing into the heaven as He went up, see, two men stood by them dressed in white,

11 who also said, “Men of Galil, why do you stand looking up into the heaven? This same יהושע, who was taken up from you into the heaven, shall come in the same waya as you saw Him go into the heaven.”

12 Then they went back to Yerushalayim from the Mount of Olives, which is near Yerushalayim, a Sabbath day’s journey.

13 And when they came in, they went up into the upper room where they were staying: both Kĕpha and Ya‛aqoḇ and Yoḥanan and Andri, Philip and T’oma, Bartholomi and Mattithyahu, Ya‛aqoḇ the son of Alphai and Shim‛on the Zealot, and Yehuḏah the son of Ya‛aqoḇ.

14 All these were continuing with one mind in prayer and supplication, with the women and Miryam the mother of יהושע, and with His brothers.

15 And in those days Kĕpha, standing up in the midst of the taught ones – and there was a gathering of about a hundred and twenty – said,

16 “Men and brothers, this Scripture had to be filled which the Set-apart Spirit spoke before by the mouth of Dawiḏ concerning Yehuḏah, who became a guide to those who seized יהושע,

17 because he was numbered with us and did receive his share in this service.”

18 (This one, therefore, purchased a field with the wages of unrighteousness, and falling forward, he burst open in the middle and all his intestines gushed out.

19 And it became known to all those dwelling in Yerushalayim, so that in their own language that field was called, Ḥaqal Dema, that is, Field of Blood).

20 “For it has been written in the Book of Psalms, ‘Let his dwelling lie waste, and let no one live in it,’ and, ‘Let another take his office.’

21 “It is therefore necessary that of the men who have been with us all the time that the Master יהושע went in and out among us,

22 beginning from the immersion of Yoḥanan to that day when He was taken up from us, that one of these should become a witness with us of His resurrection.”

23 And they put forward two: Yosĕph called Barsabba, who was also called Justus, and Mattithyahu.

24 And praying they said, “You, יהוה, who know the hearts of all, show which one of these two You have chosen

25 to receive the share in this service and office of the emissary from which Yehuḏah by transgression fell, to go to his own place.”

26 And they cast their lots, and the lot fell on Mattithyahu. And he was numbered with the eleven emissaries.

Job 7-8


7|1 “Does not man have to struggle on earth? For his days are like the days of a hired man.

2 Like a servant who sighs for the shade, and like a hireling longing for his wages,

3 so am I allotted months of futility. And nights of trouble have been appointed to me.

4 When I lie down, I say, ‘When am I going to rise, and the night be ended?’ For I have had my fill of tossing till dawn.

5 My body is covered with worms and dirt, my skin is cracked and it festers.

6 My days are swifter than a weaver’s shuttle, and are spent without expectancy.

7 Remember that my life is a breath! My eye is never again to see good.

8 The eye of him who sees me sees me no longer. Your eyes are upon me, and I am no more.

9 The cloud fades and vanishes away, so he who goes down to the grave does not come up.

10 He returns no more to his house, nor does his place know him any more.

11 I also, I do not hold my mouth, I speak in the distress of my spirit, I complain in the bitterness of my being.

12 Am I the sea, or a sea monster, that You set a guard over me?

13 When I say, ‘My bed does comfort me, my couch does ease my complaint,’

14 then You frighten me with dreams and make me afraid with visions,

15 so that my being chooses strangling, death rather than my bones.

16 I have wasted away, I would not live forever. Leave me alone, for my days are a breath.

17 What is man, that You should make him great, that You should set Your heart on him,

18 that You should visit him every morning, trying him every moment?

19 How long do You not look away from me, nor leave me alone till I swallow my saliva?

20 Have I sinned? What have I done to You, O Watcher of men? Why have You set me as Your target, so that I am a burden to You?

21 And why do You not pardon my transgression, and take away my crookedness? For now I lie down in the dust, and You shall seek me, but I am not.”

8| 1 And Bildaḏ the Shuḥite answered and said,

2 “How long are you going to speak like this, since the words of your mouth are a strong wind?

3 Does Ěl twist right-ruling? Or does the Almighty twist what is right?

4 If your sons have sinned against Him, and He delivers them into the hand of their transgression,

5 if you diligently seek Ěl and plead with the Almighty,

6 if you were clear and straight, then indeed He would awake for you, and shall bless your righteous dwelling place.

7 Though your beginning was small, yet your latter end would greatly increase.

8 Indeed, please ask the former generation, and prepare for the research of their fathers,

9 for we are but of yesterday, and know not, because our days on earth are as a shadow.

10 Do they not teach you, speak to you, and bring forth words from their heart?

11 Does papyrus grow without a marsh, a reed thrive without water?

12 While it is yet green, not cut down, it dries out before any plant.

13 So are the paths of all who forget Ěl, and the expectancy of a defiled one does perish,

14 whose refuge is cut off, and whose trust is a spider’s web.

15 He leans on his house, but it does not stand. He holds it fast, but it does not last.

16 He is moist before the sun, and his branches spread out in his garden.

17 His roots wrap around a heap, and look for a place in the stones.

18 If he is destroyed from his place, then it shall deny him: ‘I have not seen you.’

19 See, this is the joy of His way, and out of the dust others grow.

20 See, Ěl does not cast away the perfect, neither hold the hand of evil-doers.

21 While He fills your mouth with laughter, and your lips with rejoicing,

22 those hating you put on shame, and the tent of the wrong is no more.”

32|1 AND he abode that night at Beyt-EL, and Leviy dreamt that they had ordained and made him the priest of EL ELYON, him and his sons forever; and he awoke from his sleep and blessed YAHUAH.

2 And Ya`aqov rose early in the morning, on the fourteenth of this month, and he gave a tithe of all that came with him, both of men and cattle, both of gold and every vessel and garment, yea, he gave tithes of all.

3 And in those days Rachel became pregnant with her son Binyamiyn. And Ya`aqov counted his sons from him upwards and Leviy fell to the portion of YAHUAH, and his father clothed him in the garments of the priesthood and filled his hands.

4 And on the fifteenth of this month, he brought to the altar fourteen oxen from amongst the cattle, and twenty eight rams, and forty nine sheep, and seven lambs, and twenty one kids of the goats as a burnt offering on the altar of sacrifice, well pleasing for a sweet savour before ELOHIYM.

5 This was his offering, in consequence of the vow which he had vowed that he would give a tenth, with their fruit offerings and their drink offerings.

6 And when the fire had consumed it, he burnt incense on the fire over the fire, and for a thank offering two oxen and four rams and four sheep, four he goats, and two sheep of a year old, and two kids of the goats; and thus he did daily for seven days.

7 And he and all his sons and his men were eating this with joy there during seven days and blessing and thanking YAHUAH, who had delivered him out of all his tribulation and had given him his vow.

8 And he tithed all the clean animals, and made a burnt sacrifice, but the unclean animals he gave not to Leviy his son, and he gave him all the souls of the men.

9 And Leviy discharged the priestly office at Beyt-EL before Ya`aqov his father in preference to his ten brothers, and he was a priest there, and Ya`aqov gave his vow:

10 Thus he tithed again the tithe to YAHUAH and sanctified it, and it became holy unto him. And for this reason it is ordained on the heavenly tablets as a Torah for the tithing again the tithe to eat before YAHUAH from year to year, in the place where it is chosen that his name should dwell, and to this Torah there is no limit of days forever.

11 This ordinance is written that it may be fulfilled from year to year in eating the second tithe before YAHUAH in the place where it has been chosen, and nothing shall remain over from it from this year to the year following.

12 For in its year shall the seed be eaten till the days of the gathering of the seed of the year, and the wine till the days of the wine, and the oil till the days of its season.

13 And all that is left thereof and becomes old, let it be regarded as polluted: let it be burnt with fire, for it is unclean.

14 And thus let them eat it together in the sanctuary, and let them not suffer it to become old.

15 And all the tithes of the oxen and sheep shall be holy unto YAHUAH, and shall belong to his priests, which they will eat before him from year to year; for thus is it ordained and engraven regarding the tithe on the heavenly tablets.

16 And on the following night, on the twenty second day of this month, Ya`aqov resolved to build that place, and to surround the court with a wall, and to sanctify it and make it holy forever, for himself and his children after him.

17 And YAHUAH appeared to him by night and blessed him and said unto him: Your name shall not be called Ya`aqov, but Yashar’el shall they name your name.

18 And he said unto him again: ‘I am YAHUAH who created the heavens and the earth, and I will increase you and multiply you exceedingly, and kings shall come forth from you, and they shall judge everywhere wherever the foot of the sons of men has trodden.

19 And I will give to your seed all the earth which is under heaven, and they shall judge all the nations according to their desires, and after that they shall get possession of the whole earth and inherit it forever.’

20 And he finished speaking with him, and he went up from him, and Ya`aqov looked till he had ascended into heaven.

21 And he saw in a vision of the night, and behold an angel descended from heaven with seven tablets in his hands, and he gave them to Ya`aqov, and he read them and knew all that was written therein which would befall him and his sons throughout all the ages.

22 And he showed him all that was written on the tablets, and said unto him: ‘Do not build this place, and do not make it an eternal sanctuary, and do not dwell here; for this is not the place. Go to the house of Avraham your father and dwell with Yitschaq your father until the day of the death of your father.

23 For in Mitsrayim you shall die in peace, and in this land you shall be buried with honour in the sepulchre of your fathers, with Avraham and Yitschaq.

24 Fear not, for as you have seen and read it, thus shall it all be; and do write down everything as you have seen and read.’

25 And Ya`aqov said: YAHUAH, how can I remember all that I have read and seen? And he said unto him: I will bring all things to your remembrance.

26 And he went up from him, and he awoke from his sleep, and he remembered everything which he had read and seen, and he wrote down all the words which he had read and seen.

27 And he celebrated there yet another day, and he sacrificed thereon according to all that he sacrificed on the former days, and called its name: Addition, for this day was added and the former days he called: The Feast.

28 And thus it was manifested that it should be, and it is written on the heavenly tablets: wherefore it was revealed to him that he should celebrate it, and add it to the seven days of the feast.

29 And its name was called: Addition, because that it was recorded amongst the days of the feast days, according to the number of the days of the year.

30 And in the night, on the twenty third of this month, Deborah Rivqah’s nurse died, and they buried her beneath the city under the oak of the river, and he called the name of this place: The river of Deborah, and the oak: The oak of the mourning of Deborah.

31 And Rivqah went and returned to her house to his father Yitschaq, and Ya`aqov sent by her hand rams and sheep and he goats that she should prepare a meal for his father such as he desired.

32 And he went after his mother till he came to the land of Kabratan, and he dwelt there.

33 And Rachel bore a son in the night, and called his name: Son of my sorrow; for she suffered in giving him birth: but his father called his name Binyamiyn, on the eleventh of the eighth month in the first of the sixth week of this jubilee.

34 And Rachel died there and she was buried in the land of Ephrathah, the same is Beyt Lechem, and Ya`aqov built a pillar on the grave of Rachel, on the road above her grave.
